StoriesInStone claims no expertise in affixing the NFC or QR coded tiles to a monument, nor is this a
service provided by StoriesInStone.
The most secure method would be embedding the tile in the monument.
Monument companies contacted by StoriesInStone vary widely as to the cost of providing this service.
For a new headstone quotes have ranged from $0 to $75. For existing headstones the range is from $75 to $300 (these quotes pertain only to headstones in the cemetery closest to the monument maker).
Simply gluing the tile to the headstone or headstone base is a viable option. You must select the right adhesive for the job (depending on the type and texture of the stone) and strictly follow the application instructions. Follow this up with an all-weather caulking around the edges.
The Veterans Administration (VA) provides a bronze medallion for applying to headstones of veterans. Their instructions for adhering the medallion to the stone is as follows:
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR EPOXY
IMPORTANT: Please read before opening epoxy packets.
1. Ensure the surface is clean (free of dust, dirt or any waxy substance).
2. Do not apply adhesive in extreme temperature or humidity ranges.
3. Do not apply adhesive to a wet surface.
4. Do not use an excessive amount that will seep around the edges of the medallion and down the headstone.
5. Ensure that the emblem can be secured against the stone to prevent slippage while the epoxy is curing.
6. Ensure emblem is oriented to be level with the text on the monument.
7. Refer to epoxy packets for Cautions and Warnings.
Instructions
1. Cut the packet tips
2. Squeeze epoxy and hardener out of both packets onto a clean piece of cardboard
3. Mix both materials thoroughly together utilizing the enclosed wooden stick until the epoxy turns an amber color
4 Apply a thin film to the back of medallion, spreading the epoxy from the center out to within ¼” of the edges. (Warning: Do not spread out to the edges which will allow the epoxy to seep out when the medallion is pressed into place.)
5. Place the medallion into the pre-determined location and clamp or hold in place
6. The epoxy has a 2-hour working time which allows plenty of time to set the medallion in place. There is no reason to rush.
7. The epoxy is fully cured at 8-hours and any clamping devices can be removed at that time.
Also, 3M Corporation has what they call Very High Bond (VHB) tape which is “Used throughout the industry to replace screws, rivets, welds and other mechanical fastening for permanent assembly in many applications. Fast, easy to use and reliable, VHB tapes help improve styling, performance and productivity. Foam conforms to many irregular surfaces and helps provide sealing, cushioning and impact resistance”. This is a two sided tape that may be the right solution in some circumstances.
